This review analysed evidence from systematic reviews to assess the role of dietary patterns in both primary and secondary prevention of cardiovascular disease (CVD). Based on the included reviews, the DASH diet was found to be the most beneficial in addressing multiple CVD risk factors in healthy populations. For secondary prevention, the Portfolio diet approach was found to be the most beneficial. However, this was dependent on the nature of the pre-existing condition. In groups both with and without CVD, the most consistent evidence was found for the DASH pattern with adherence resulting in improvements in blood pressure, blood lipids and body weight.
