This review aims to provide evidence to inform effective prevention models for obesity and substance misuse in the primary and early secondary school years. It identifies risk and protective factors and factors that promote resiliency. For substance misuse, risk factors were identified at the individual, family, school and community levels while protective factors were identified at the individual, family and school levels. For obesity, risk and protective factors were identified at the individual and family levels only. Modifiable factors that encourage resiliency were identified. The review found that programs that target associated developmental processes in the primary and early secondary school years could contribute to preventing both substance misuse and obesity.
