People with intellectual disabilities (PWID) have specific healthcare needs. This Evidence Check sought evidence for methods to improve the capacity of healthcare services, systems and workforce to respond to these needs. The included reviews identified areas for improvement including: structural responses, roles/staffing, communication and information strategies, clinical interactions, environment, and ethics and research. Although the focus of the review was community and tertiary care, the authors note the importance of integrating primary care and supporting GPs in providing care to PWID. The review also places the findings within the context of the NDIS.
