Linking generations to unlock the future of mental health
18 and up study
The 18 and Up Study is a groundbreaking intergenerational mental health and wellbeing project, made possible through a $4.5 million grant from the National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC).
Building on the legacy of the 45 and Up Study, it will invite the adult children and grandchildren of participants — to create a multigenerational cohort of around 300,000 individuals — to take part. Together, they will help us understand how mental health unfolds across generations. Recruitment is expected to begin in 2026.

Leadership and partners
The study is guided by an experienced, multidisciplinary team of researchers, policy leaders, and lived-experience advocates from across Australia.
The Study is being led by Dr Martin McNamara, CEO of the Sax Institute, as Chief Investigator and a team of experts in public health, epidemiology, health economics, psychology, and community-led research. Their combined track record in large-scale longitudinal studies ensures the project will be scientifically rigorous, ethically sound, and responsive to community needs.
Collaboration is central. We’re partnering with government, service providers, universities, and lived-experience networks to ensure findings are relevant, actionable, and grounded in real-world contexts.

“The 18 and Up Study will help us understand the life story of younger people and the differences in mental health across generations. I’m humbled to be part of this work, and I hope that the study will help shape the way support is provided for future generations.”
