This month, we focus on the major challenge of keeping patients safe within our healthcare institutions. Our recent HARC forum on accreditation heard that too many patients are still harmed in our hospitals, with Canadian expert Leslee Thompson suggesting it’s time to disrupt the system to drive improvements in care.
Patient safety is also at the centre of new Australian research, with one study identifying key risk factors for medication problems after patients are discharged from hospital, and another looking at the feasibility of challenging patients’ recorded antibiotics allergies.
In our profile, we meet “a rebel with a cause”, Dr Faisal Saeed, who is currently working at the Agency for Clinical Innovation, as part of his quest to bring safe, quality healthcare to people in his homeland of the Maldives.
