This Evidence Check aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of current sleep and settling interventions for infants and children aged 0–5 years in Australia. The findings from thirteen systematic reviews indicate that bedtime routines have strong evidence for improving child sleep and settling. Behavioural approaches show moderate evidence for improving sleep but inconsistent results for other outcomes. The review found limited evidence for specific practices within bedtime routines and behavioural approaches. There were also differences in terminology and definitions across sources. Recommendations should promote consistent bedtime routines and limit behavioural approaches, especially those based on extinction principles. Tailored advice for diverse family needs is essential.
