This Evidence Check review described six paediatric models of care. Paediatric short stay wards, assessment wards and embedded primary care models resulted in fewer admission to hospital, fewer re-presentations, shorter length of stay and waiting times, more appropriate investigations and tests, and cost savings. Outreach models were efficient and increased access to specialist paediatric services for patients from rural and remote regions. These models saved costs, waiting times, presentations and admissions to tertiary hospitals while providing appropriate and effective health care. Core elements across different models and systems were also identified.
