This Evidence Check review examined elements of best practice models of clinical oversight including supervision (both direct and indirect), communication strategies, performance assessment and supportive environments. It found clinical oversight is enhanced when more experienced health care professionals set expectations, recognise uncertainty, plan communication, are easily available, reassure trainees and provide them with autonomy. However it found a lack of high quality outcomes-based studies that assess methods of clinical oversight.
