This Evidence Check review examined variation in care for 16 common child health conditions across inpatient, outpatient and emergency department settings and found widespread variation. Common factors associated with variation are identified. To reduce variation in Australian paediatric care, the authors propose increased access to and analysis of existing national inpatient and emergency databases, and a system-wide approach to documenting outpatient care. Existing datasets should be broadened to include patient and family-centred measures as well as diagnostic and treatment practices.
