This Evidence Check review presents a summary of the evidence of safely managing expressed breast milk (EBM) in hospital, home and community settings. It found that, regarding risks of pathogen transmission from mother to child, benefits for the infant must be considered against the possible severity of the disease. EBM can be safely stored at -20 degrees Celsius for up to 12 months. -80 degrees Celsius may be an option for moderate term storage. Continuous monitoring of the risk of misdelivery is required.
