This Evidence Check review found that, at the international level, nurse practitioners are active in intensive care services, emergency departments, surgical and anaesthetic services, general medical services, oncology, haematology and primary health care. There was also evidence of a positive economic impact. In NSW, barriers to using nurse practitioners include professional processes, guidelines and formulary requirements and provider and patient education.
