With more than a quarter of Australian adolescents currently considered overweight or obese, robust targets to reduce prevalence have been set. Evidence around obesity prevention approaches is needed to inform future interventions. This review focused on effective community-based approaches to prevention of adolescent obesity, synthesising both grey and published literature. The review identified 13 community based secondary prevention programs that were effective. Common program elements included being at least 3-months duration; multi-component (coupled with either a lifestyle or psychological component); group-based; and supported by parental involvement. The review also considers the applicability of programs to the NSW context.
