We’ll be continuing our training events program in early March with a course aimed at early career researchers. The three-day course offers researchers a practical guide to building successful partnerships with policy makers, to give their research the best chance of making an impact on policies, programs and services.

The course draws on the expertise of senior policy makers and researchers to help early career researchers build the skills they need to initiate, manage and sustain research partnerships with policy makers. Attendees will learn practical skills such as:

  • How to embark on a new policy relationship and get new policy partners on board
  • How to frame a research idea for a policy audience
  • Laying the foundations for co-production
  • Establishing the right governance framework for collaborative projects
  • How best to engage policy makers with research findings.

For the March session, our four course presenters are Adrian Bauman, Sesquicentenary Professor of Public Health, and theme leader for Physical Activity and Exercise at the Charles Perkins Centre at the University of Sydney; Associate Professor Thackway, Executive Director, Epidemiology and Evidence at NSW Health, and Conjoint Associate Professor, School of Public Health and Community Medicine at the University of NSW; Professor Sally Green, Co-Director of Cochrane Australia and a Professorial Fellow and Graduate Research Co-ordinator in the School of Public Health and Preventive Medicine at Monash University; and Mr Adam Cresswell, Chief Communications Officer at the Sax Institute. Between them, our presenters have clocked up many decades of experience in public health policy, research and communications.

The “Building successful partnerships for policy-relevant research” course will be held in Sydney on four occasions throughout 2019. Your first chance to attend will be 5-7 March; the course will then be repeated on 21-23 May, 20-22 August and 5-7 November. Places are limited, so book early.
