Sax Institute welcomes new Board Chair

The Sax Institute is delighted to announce the appointment of Professor Ian Olver AM as the new Chair of its Board of Directors.

A world-renowned cancer researcher, bioethicist and medical oncologist, Professor Olver brings to his new role unrivalled experience in leading national public health organisations. He was Chief Executive Officer of Cancer Council Australia from 2006 to 2014 and is also a former Chair of the Medical Oncology Group of Australia. He was appointed a Member of the Order of Australia in 2011.

Professor Olver said he looked forward to leading the next phase of growth at the Sax Institute, which was set up in 2002 as an independent not-for-profit organisation that aims to improve the health and wellbeing of Australians by driving the use of research evidence in policies, programs and services.

“I am honoured to accept this position with the Sax Institute, an organisation whose work I have long admired,” Professor Olver said. “The Institute’s key programs, such as the 45 and Up Study, make vital contributions to Australia’s research efforts to inform better health services.

”I look forward to working with the Institute’s Board and CEO to help further and extend its national reach and impact.”

Sax Institute CEO Professor Sally Redman AO said Professor Olver’s expertise and experience would be crucial in helping the Institute achieve its ambitious goals and address some of Australia’s key public health challenges.

“We’re thrilled to welcome someone of Professor Olver’s stature to our organisation. I’m very much looking forward to working with him and I’m certain he will be making an enormous contribution to the Institute as it embarks on its next phase of growth and development.”

Professor Olver is taking over from Ms Kim Anderson, who has guided the Institute as Acting Chair since October 2018, following the resignation of former Chair Dr Irene Moss AO who had headed the organisation for 12 years. Ms Anderson will remain on the Board.

Professor Redman said she wished to record her sincere thanks to Ms Anderson and Dr Moss for their important contributions to the organisation.

Professor Olver’s appointment became effective from 26 September 2019.
