Aussies over 45 in great health

New research from the 45 and Up Study has shown that retirement is associated with better health, Channel 7 News reported. Research which analysed a sample of 30,000 working adults from the 45 and Up Study, and presented at the recent annual Study meeting, found that retirees smoked less, were more physically active, slept more and had less ‘excessive sitting’. The authors said that retirement was an opportunity to engineer new, healthy lifestyles. Doctors and policy makers could capitalise on people’s willingness to change their lifestyle behaviours as they are transitioning to retirement and consider developing special programs for retirees.
