This Evidence Check considers the role of primary care in early detection, including screening and follow-up care of patients with breast, colorectal, prostate and lung cancer. Best practice models include partnerships between Medicare Locals and local GP practices to increase screening uptake and to define clear referral routes. New models of follow-up, more structured shared cancer surveillance and psychosocial support, risk stratification and economic evaluation of follow up models are needed.
