"Making the most of the CHeReL: a burgeoning resource for research"

On the 13th December 2007, the Sax Institute and the Centre for Health Record Linkage held a half day forum to discuss the opportunities presented by the CHeReL for new research using linked health data and to hear case studies of success and innovation in record linkage from NSW and nationally.

Staff of the CHeReL provided updates on the availability of linked data sets, data quality issues, and services they can provide to assist in research proposal development.

Speakers included:

There were a range of presentations by leading NSW data linkage researchers who have been successful in securing grants for their work.

Record Linkage forum - Using CHeReL for research

On 6th December 2006, the Centre for Health Record Linkage (CHeReL) ran an information forum - Using CheReL for Research - to coincide with opening its doors for business. This forum provided over 100 researchers and health record users with comprehensive information on how to access CHeReL services for research projects and programs. Following this session, concurrent 'theme' based workshops were held to explores ideas for new research using record linkage.

Presentations

Session 1: How to Use CHeReL

Session 2: Concurrent Workshops

Workshop A: Cancer and linked record research

Workshop B: Maternal and Perinatal linked record research

Workshop C: Longitudinal/cohort studies and linked record research

Link & Multiply: the Benefits of Data Linkage

On 27th July 2006, the Sax Insititute and the Centre for Health Record Linkage Management Committee hosted the Data Symposium- Link and Multiply: the Benefits of Data Linkage in Sydney.

Over 100 senior researchers, policy makers and practitioners attended the Symposium to share information on how data linkage is being used nationally and internationally and, to promote discussion on how we can use the Centre for Health Record Linkage to provide evidence for better health planning.

We were very pleased to be joined by one of the international leaders in using linked data for research Professor Michael Goldacre, Director of the Unit of Health-Care Epidemiology at the University of Oxford.
