This Evidence Check review examined the evidence base for the effectiveness of consumer led mental health services. It found consistently positive results across a number of measures although the evidence base is relatively small. Positive outcomes were reported in areas including quality of life, social inclusion, housing and employment, compared to those who accessed non-consumer led services. Most of the evidence comes from the United States and the review recommends the commissioning of a survey of consumer-operated services in Australia along with the evaluation of existing services with an emphasis on which outcomes are important to consumers.
